Enhancing Conveyor Reliability Through Proven Acoustic Monitoring Technology

The ARMS (Automated Roller Monitoring System) solution provides reliable, continuous monitoring of conveyor rollers, combining Terra15’s Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) with REMA TIP TOP’s expertise in conveyor optimisation and maintenance. This approach supports maintenance teams in identifying early-stage roller issues, tracking progression, and timing replacements more accurately—reducing unplanned downtime and avoiding unnecessary servicing.
Originally developed for critical infrastructure monitoring, the DAS technology behind ARMS has been adapted for mining and materials handling environments. The system uses a maintenance-free fibre optic cable to detect acoustic signals and vibrations along the conveyor line—signals that indicate the condition of the rollers.
At the core of this system is the Treble® interrogator, a Terra15-developed device that sends thousands of laser pulses every second through the fibre. It detects subtle changes in the backscattered signal caused by vibrations, allowing the system to pinpoint emerging issues with precision.
All data is processed through AssureSrv®, a secure, cloud-based software platform, enabling remote access and real-time visibility for authorised users with internet access.
Following in-house validation, REMA TIP TOP and Terra15 have successfully trialled the ARMS solution and are now supporting commercial deployments across operational sites in Australia.
